Wingin’ It with Flying Wings

Several buddies in my flying club have been enjoying flying combat with the Unicorn Wing and they are having a blast. I have mine on order, as a birthday gift request, and hope to join them soon. The Unicorn Wing is made of EPP Foam, which is essentially the foam you would find in your cars bumper. Light, flexible, and nearly indestructible makes this foam great for combat flying.

In the meantime while I wait for my birthday gift (honey, if you are reading, this is the hint) I have become fascinated with flying wings in general, and started looking around at other designs. It amazes me that something so simple can really fly so well. Flying wings are not new by any chance, they have been around in some form since the 1930s and probably even longer than that.

Last week I decided I had to build a flying wing, and I wanted to build it out of the pile of BlueCor FanFold I have. If you are not familiar with BlueCor, it is the insulation board used on houses and is available at home improvement stores. It generally runs about $30USD for a 4′ by 50′ piece and varies in thickness from 1/8 inch to 2 inches. The foam used (mostly) for plane building is 1/4 inch thick and is sold folded 4′x2′, thus the nick name FanFold.

While searching for ideas and plans, I came across the Dazi which is a glider flying wing design made from CoroPlast, and I will keep that idea for a future project.

After more searching I came across the 32″ FanFold Flying Wing. I built it in under two hours and I cannibalized my SIG Electric Kadet for the electronics.

This wing is definitely not built for combat, but is a nice construction and has some good flight characteristics. Unfortunately I decided not to wait for the heavy winds to subside before my tests. Over two days, I was able to get two good flights and eight flights with unexpected landings (my terminology for crashes) before it smashed beyond repair. The gear is all good and will go into the next wing, but I need to make a few changes in the design.
